President Urges Public to Give Due Attention for Environmental Preservation

Addis Ababa,July19(ENA)--The Ethiopian government would render every assistance to the effort geared towards preserving the environment through the planting of trees, President Girma Woldegiorgis said.

The president made the remark on Saturday while attending a tree planting campaign in Debrezeit town jointly organized by Forum for Environment, an association of environmentalists, and Fikrina Selam organization.

The president said the government would continue toi assist efforts as it recognizes that preserving the environment and ensuring sustainable development were key to preserve the existence and continuation of generations.

The damages being done to the natural resources in Ethiopia have been making life difficult for the farmer and the pastoralist community, the president said, adding deforestation, land degradation and soil erosion were the main reasons for the threats.

The president has urged the public at large to give special attention to the preservation of the natural habitat as it directly affects the life of every human being.

Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, His Holiness Abune Paulos, senior government officials, invited guests and the local community have joined in the transplanting of tree seedlings held at the Debre Zeit Kidane Mehret Church.
