Floods inundate Geferem locality in Afar
Region July 18(ENA)--The supply of emergency relief was cut off as floods from the Awash river totally engulfed the Geferem locality in Bure Mudaitu Woreda in Afar State, the Woreda administration said.
Relief food distribution to 33,000 drought affected people was made difficult as the floods from the Awash river basins inundate the locality, the administration told ENA on Friday.
Eight residential units have been drifted away by the floods, it indicated.
The Awash basins water management is exerting huge efforts to divert the floods, it said.
It said there were fears that the floods that have been increasing in volume since Monday could deluge other localities as well.
A team charged with the task of assessing the magnitude of the disaster and facilitating possible ways of reaching the recipients with emergency supply moved to the area on Thursday.
