Meles Says London Summit Has Significant Political Importance To Africa

Addis Ababa,July 15(ENA)--Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said the two-day London Summit of the Heads of State and Government on progressive governance has a significant political importance to Africa.

Briefing journalists at the end of the Summit on Monday, Meles said the Summit has supported Africa's position in the liberalization of trade and other business activities.

The Prime Minister said the positive attitude being shown by developed countries towards Africa would enable to further consolidate their assistance to the continent.

He said the summit would also help to exercise the principle of good governance in Africa.

According to Meles, the summit has reached consensus that relations between developed and developing nations should be governed in the spirit of partnership rather than aid providers and recipients.

The summit has also reached common understanding that the relations and cooperation between the developed and developing states be promoted based on the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NePAD), Meles said.

He said the bilateral cooperation between Ethiopia and the United Kingdom is conducted based on the principles of NePAD.

During his stay in London, Meles had held talks with British Prime Minister Tony Blair, German Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder, Swedish Prime Minister, Goran Persson and other leaders of European countries on bilateral cooperation and issues related to the Horn of Africa.

The Heads of State and Government of 14 countries from five continents have taken part in the London Summit.
