AU Summit Elects Malian Former President as Union's Commission Chairman

Addis Ababa, July 11(ENA)--The Second Summit of the African Union (AU) being held in Maputo, Mozambique elected Malian former president, Alpha Oumar Konare, as Chairman of the Union's Commission.

Sources close to the session told ENA on Friday that Konare was elected with a majority vote with 10 abstainers.

The summit has also elected Patrick Muzumaka, a Rwandan citizen, as Deputy Chairman of the Union's Commission.

The session is also expected to elect eight other candidates as various commissioners of the African Union, the sources said.

East, South, West, North and Central African sub regions have each delegated one female and one male candidates who will compete for the stated positions.

Ethiopia on its part has delegated Ambassador Tadelech Haile-Michael to compete for the position of AU's Political Affairs Commissioner.

Some 31 African Heads of State and government including Prime Minister Meles Zenawi are in attendance at the summit.
