Dawit calls for enhanced Ethio-China cooperation in poverty reduction

Addis Ababa, July 1(ENA)-- Speaker of the House of People's Representatives Dawit Yohannis says Ethiopia and China need to exert joint efforts and enhance cooperation to fight poverty.

Conferring with the visiting Chinese delegation here on Monday, Dawit said the government of China has been one of Ethiopia's strong partners in the poverty reduction endeavors the country has embarked upon.

Dawit has also briefed the delegation about the democratization processes underway in the country.

The delegation representing the Ethiopian parliamentarians also expressed Ethiopia's desire to share experiences on issues pertinent to women's right, pastoral development and environmental protection, particularly in preventing soil erosion.

Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China Xu Jialu said on his part that the delegation has learnt that there are many prospects for development cooperation between the two countries.

Jialu said the current international issue of globalization was a compelling phenomenon for developing countries to cooperate.

He said, the South South cooperation would play important role in stepping up cooperation among the developing countries striving to resist the challenges posed by globalization.

He said the bilateral relationship between the two counties need to be further strengthened.

The delegation had held discussion with President Girma Woldegiorgis and senior government officials, and visited project sites being implemented under the auspices of the Ethio-China cooperation.

Xu Jialu extended invitation to Dawit to visit China.
