Addis Ababa, July 26(ENA)--The European commission (EC) expressed its commitment to work towards longer-term food security in Ethiopia.

Briefing journalists here on Thursday, EC delegation said it would continue providing assistance to address food aid dependency in the country.

Decreasing food aid dependency of the large segment of the population and the introduction of innovative policy could be instrumental in addressing chronic food insecurity, they said.

The delegation expressed the commitment of EC to provide 25,000 metric tone to be distributed through non-governmental organizations projects and 25,000 metric tone through World Food Program (WFP).

EC’s support of integrated food security programs have focused so far on most vulnerable areas of the Tigray and Amhara states.

The EC contributions to food security operations in Ethiopia amounted to 2.65 billion Birr over the last five years.
