EPRDF calls public to rally behind front in tackling anti-democratic practices, expediting Dev't efforts

Addis Ababa, July 7 (ENA)--The Ethiopian Peoples' Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) has called on the people of Ethiopia to rally behind the front in support the efforts exerted to tackle the pitfalls threatening the nation's democratic system once and for all.

In a statement it issued on Saturday in connection with the conclusion of EPRDF council's 19-day meeting on Friday the front said encouraging results have been registered over the past decade in implementing revolutionary democracy in the nation.

However, the front said certain shortcomings that could jeopardize the flourishing democracy and free market economy of the country have been witnessed in the reported period.

The problems spurred ideological differences within the front, the majority of which acknowledged the necessity of reform to address the shortcomings in a sustainable manner.

A splinter group in the front witlessly believed that EPRDF problems originated not from the inside but arose from the outside, the statement said.

It said the faction group miscalculated the objective reality of the country and decided to promote dependency, mal -democratic practices and corruption.

The statement said EPRDF has found out that the desire to prosper through nepotism and corruption at the expense of the popular struggle was the major menace threatening the democratic system.

These anti-democratic trends could endanger the well being of the country, if the bane of corruption and undemocratic practices go unabated, the statement said.

The statement has also called for an all-out support against narrow-nationalism and arrogant attitudes.

The council has reassured the appropriateness of the measures taken by the government and EPRDF to reverse Eritrea's war of aggression.

The council has reiterated its appreciation to the strong unity between the peoples of Ethiopia and the gallant national army to foil Eritrea's flagrant invasion.

The council said the dissident group had played no significant role in the national efforts geared to undo Eritrea's aggression swiftly and sustainbly.

The council stressed the need for relentless efforts to create a transparent system at all levels in a bid to stamp out corruption from the country.
