UN agencies in Ethiopia contributing to socio-economic development: Meles
Addis Ababa, February 19(ENA)-- Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said the various assistance being provided by United Nations specialized agencies to Ethiopia were contributing significantly to the socio-economic development of the nation.
Briefing journalists after discussions with country representatives of the agencies here on Wednesday, Meles said UN agencies here were carrying out commendable activities in averting the current food crisis facing the country.
The discussion focussed on ways of further enhancing the cooperation between the government and UN specialized bodies, Meles said.
Meles said the agencies have expressed their readiness to work in cooperation with the Ethiopian government mainly in poverty reduction and sustainable development activities.
Resident representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Samuel Nyambi on his part reaffirmed his agencies commitment to support the country's development initiatives.
UNDP and the Ethiopian government were undertaking joint poverty reduction and sustainable development activities, he said.
The discussion with Prime Minister Meles was very fruitful and constructive, he said, adding that it would be helpful in further consolidating multilateral cooperation.
Nyambi also appreciated Ethiopia's resolve to reduce poverty and control the spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
