Health professionals say no sign of food poisoning with recent students panic at AAU

Addis Ababa, Feb. 14(ENA)--A disturbing spell of fainting that occurred at the Addis Ababa University (AAU) has no connection whatsoever with food poisoning, health professionals confirmed.

Medical director of the Black Lion Hospital and head of internal medicine with the hospital told ENA on Thursday that preliminary physical and laboratory examinations of 30 students who were brought to the health facilities did not indicate any link with poisoning.

The medical director Dr. Zeru Gebre-Mariam and head of internal medicine Dr. Wondwossen Tadesse said no one has shown symptoms related to food poisoning like vomiting, high fever and diarrhea.

He said counseling services have been given to the students to enable them to begin their normal activities.

Commenting on the high number of students coming to the hospital, he said the mass hysteria was created following the death of two students at the main campus of the AAU. He said such a situation happens sometimes.

The Black Lion Hospital has deployed a team of doctors to deal with the situation and provide counseling services to the students who are still in panic.

Meanwhile, the Menilik II Hospital has revealed the cause that led to the death of the two students at the main campus.

According to representative of the medical director Dr. Atsede Darge the autopsy examination carried out on the late Wondwossen Simon who was a third year student at the main campus didn’t indicate any injury on the external part of his body.

But tests carried out on his lung, liver, heart, kidney and intestine showed bleeding.

While the autoposy examination carried out on the late Tenaw Filate who was a freshman indicated his death was caused by respiratory disorder.

The academic president of the university has urged the students to stay clam and take their examinations according to the schedule.
