AU’s dynamism lies in its capacity to face challenges, adapt to new situations: Essy

Addis Ababa, February 01 (ENA)-- The dynamism of building the African Union lies in making the institution capable of facing challenges and its ability to adapt to new situations, Interim Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union said.
In his address to the Second Extra-ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, which opened here on Saturday, Amara Essy said the building of the African Union is a continuous process, which will continue from generation to generation.
The most important thing is to do everything to make sure that out generation could do what is expected of it and lay the strong and lasting foundation for the Union, Essy said.
Essy said the current session is of great importance as it is working on the architectural design of the African Union, which will be submitted to the First Extra-Ordinary Summit of the Assembly of the Union.
The Session falls with in the framework of the Sirte declaration, which stresses the need for a strong, united and interdependent Africa, he said.
The session would consider the recommendations made by the ad hoc ministerial committee that had met in Sun City, South Africa from 20-21 January 2003 to deliberate on the proposed amendments on the Constitutive Act of the African Union.
Essy said the Constitutive defined an appropriate framework and set a natural mechanism to facilitate the attainment of the objectives of a strong and energized union capable of meeting the aspirations of the African people.
The session is also expected to deliberate on the modalities for the election of the commissioners, which it referred to the permanent representatives committee for further reflection, according to the Interim Chairperson of the Commission.
Essy appealed to the executive council to hold the consultations at the level of their respective regions in order to appoint the 10 members of the ministerial panel for the pre-election process of the commissioners’ panel.
