Government Launches All-out Efforts To Avert HIV/AIDS, Drought: Meles

Addis Ababa, Dec. 12(ENA)--Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said the government have launched an all out efforts aimed at cotaining the spread of HIV/AIDS and the current food crisis.

During talks he held with the British Parliamentary Delegation led by Laurence Robertson here on Thursday, Meles said the government in collaboration with donors was doing its level best to avert the existing humanitarian crisis.

The relief assistance Ethiopia received from European Union (EU) was encouraging, but the delivery mechanism should also be given due attention, he said.

HIV/AIDS prevention activities had also been further consolidated now more than ever before, Meles told the delegation.

He also said the country has strong determination for peace and has launched efforts aimed at fighting terrorism, according to a spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Briefing journalists on his part, Robertson said the delegation had learnt that the drought has reached in a very serious condition.

He said the British government would give additional relief assistance to drought-affected people in Ethiopia, in addition to the 5 million pound it donated for the same cause previously.

The delegation would discuss with the British Department for International Development ways of dispatching additional emergency assistance to Ethiopia.
