Ethio-Sudanese border demarcating commission formed
Addis Ababa, Dec.26 (ENA)--The Ethio-Sudanese border demarcating commission charged with the task of delimitating the boundaries of the two countries was set up in Khartoum, Sudan, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
The spokesperson made the remarks here on Friday when the Ethiopian delegation led by State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Tekeda Alemu arrived at the Bole International Airport after attending the second Joint Political Committee Meeting in Khartoum, Sudan.
The formation of the commission would enable the two countries to demarcate their boundaries, which is only outlined on maps, the spokesperson said.
The commission was formed as per the agreements reached during the 5th Joint Ministerial Commission Meeting, the spokesperson indicated, adding the commission would meet and devise its working systems prior to the 6th Joint Ministerial Commission meeting.
The spokesperson said the second Joint Political Committee Meeting has evaluated the implementation of earlier agreements in political, economic and trade as well as transport and communications sectors over the past six months.
The meeting has also assessed the issue of security, refugees and water management cooperation between the two countries, the spokesperson said, adding improving port services and reduction of tariff were also points of discussion.
Agreements were reached in the transport and communications sector to speed up the construction of Metema-Gondar-Galabat road and strengthen existing efforts to connect the two countries in railways, according to the spokesperson.
The Ethiopian delegation comprising members from 17 pertinent government offices left for Khartoum last Tuesday to attend the second Joint Political Committee meeting held every six months.
