EEPCo to undertake four HEP projects generating 668 mega watts

Addis Ababa, August 31(ENA)-- The Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) says it has planned to undertake four hydroelectric power (HEP) projects generating 668 Mega watts over the next five years.

EEPCo general manager, Mihiret Debebe said the projects would be carried out on Tekezie, Finchea, Gojeb and Giligel Gibe rivers.

He said work on the construction of HEP projects on Finchea and Gilgel Gibe rivers has already been launched.

EEPCo also signed memorandum of understanding with three private companies to carry out four other HEP projects with the capacity of generating 617 mega watts of electric power, Mihiret said.

He said feasibility studies were also underway to execute similar projects, which could emit 967 mega watts, on Belesa, Chemogayida, Halele Worabessa and Amertinesh rivers.

The country is endowed with several rivers with HEP potential, which could produce 30,000 Mega watts of electric power, Mihiret said.
