Ethiopia seeks Canadian support for implementing NEPAD's initiatives: Girma

Addis Ababa,August 29(ENA)--Ethiopia seeks the support of the developed nations including Canada in its efforts exerted to implement the vision of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), president Girma Wolde -Giorgis said.

During talks held at the national place on Thursday while receiving the credentials of the newly appointed Canadian ambassador to Ethiopia Rosaline Murray, the president said his country was determined to implement the initiatives of NEPAD which he said is the brain child of Africans aimed at changing the grim reality in the continent.

He said Ethiopia has begun taking constructive measures believed to be instrumental in implanting the provisions set in the development program.

The president also told the ambassador that the incumbent government has been transporting relief grains from the areas where there is surplus production to the areas that have been severely affected by drought due to failure of seasonal rainfalls.

The construction of dams for irrigation development could enable to grant food security in the country that has been heavily dependant on rain fed agriculture, an official with the ministry of foreign affairs who attended the discussion quoted the president as saying.

The projects being undertaken in the country to ensure food secuity should be strengthened based on the development cooperation agreement that exist between Ethiopia and Canada.

Ambassador Murray said on her part that the Canadian development assistance provided to Ethiopia would be further consolidated in the years ahead.

She said Canadian support for the establishment of good governance, prevalence of democracy and to the build the capacity of the judiciary would be further strengthened.

The ambassador said it was the desire of her government to work with Ethiopia to implement the objectives set in the NEPAD initiative.

Meanwhile, president Girma met and held discussions with the newly appointed Malawian ambassador to Ethiopia, Geoffery L.J Mvula about bilateral and international issues

The president said Ethiopia and Malawi should work in cooperation and consultations to realize the objectives of the African Union (AU).

After presenting his credentials to the president, Ambassador Mvula said the two countries should raise their cooperation in the economy, political and social sectors to a new height.
