2.8 Million Birr Worth Medicinal Drugs Dispatched To Drought-Affected States

Addis Ababa, August. 21(ENA)--Medical kits worth about 2.8 million Birr were dispatched to the Afar and Somali States to control diseases that may occur as a result of the perishing of domestic animals by drought in the states, the Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Commission announced on Monday.

Public Relations Head with The commission, Sisay Tadesse told ENA that the drugs that were sent last week would be adequate to treat 21,000 people for a period of three months.

It said medicinal drugs worth about three million Birr had also been sent to the stated states earlier.

The government has distributed 45,000 tons relief grain and 300 metric tones of nutritious food among the worst drought-hit people in different parts of the country, he said.

The commission has so far apportioned 145,000 metric tones of relief assistance among the people affected by shortage of food due to rain failure in various states since June this year.

An over 13 million Birr worth seeds were also apportioned among states where there was delay of rainfall during the Meher season, Sisay said.

About 5.9 million People in the country need currently relief assistance amounting to 348,000 metric tones.
