Sudan’s Presidential Advisor on Peace Pays Visit to AU Commission

Addis Ababa, August.20(ENA)--The advisor to the President of the Republic of Sudan on Peace Affairs, Dr. Ghazi S. Attabani has paid an official visit to the Headquarters of the Commission of the African Union on Monday.

Dr. Attabani was received by Ambassador Mohamat Habib Doutoum, acting on behalf of the Interim Chairperson of the Commission, Mr. Amara Essy, a press release issued by the African Union said.

Dr. Attabani briefed Ambassador Doutoum on the prospects for peace in the Republic of Sudan arising from the signing of a protocol between the government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLA/M) at Machacos, Kenya in mid July, the release said.

Dr. Attabani expressed satisfaction with the Machacos protocol signed between President Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir and John Garang and stated that it had given greater impetus to the attainment of peace in the whole country.

Dr. Attabani further stated that by mid-September, he hoped that the main obstacles to the peace process would have been resolved and thus paving the way for a peaceful Republic of Sudan.

"Peace in the Republic of Sudan was likely to generate a new momentum not only to the region but to the African continent, and hence, a good omen to the newly born African Union," the release quoted Attabani as saying.

Ambassador Doutoum on the occasion expressed hope that the commitment demonstrated by both the government and the SPLA/M would bring a lasting peace to the country, adding that peace and stability in the Sudan would bring peace to the entire continent.
