Opposition Group Urges International Community to Stop Supporting Regime in Asmara

Addis Ababa, August 21 (ENA)--A key component of Eritrea’s armed opposition meeting has called on the international community to stop supporting the Asmara government so as to ensure peace and democracy, sources close to the movement told AFP on Monday.

The appeal was made during a two week long congress of the Eritrean Liberation Front_ Revolutionary congress (ELF-RC), an important element of the Alliance of National Eritrean Forces, which ended on Monday.

The meeting brought together dozens of delegates and members, including outgoing ELF_RC president Ibrahim Mohammed Ali and his successor Mohammed Nasser, the movement’s historic leader.

The congress focused on the political situation in Eritrea, the organization’s status, the national elections slated for December and Eritrea’s relations with neighboring countries in the Horn of Africa, the sources told the AFP.

Also present as observers were several delegations from the other 10 movements that make up ANEF, a coalition formed in 1999 of the 11 groups in exile, including its president Tewolde Gebreselassie.
