Building
capitalist economic system said primary objective of revolutionary democracy
Addis
Ababa, August 11(ENA)ญญญ-- The primary objective of revolutionary democracy
being pursued by the government of Ethiopia is to build a free market economy in
the country, Minister of Economic Development and Cooperation (MEDaC) said.
Girma
Birru told ENA on Friday that the tenets of revolutionary democracy should not
be seen as a subordinate of communism.
Revolutionary
democracy, which takes into account the objective reality of the country, was
the only option to bring about economic transformation and social progress, the
minister said.
Girma
described as "inappropriate and grave mistake" the attempt by some
groups to associate revolutionary democracy with the principles of socialism.
Both
the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank do not agree to the idea that
capitalism could not develop in a situation where land is owned by the
government and the public, the minister said.
He
said the international institutions wouldn't have shown their willingness and
cooperation with the country if revolutionary democracy has the inclination to
socialism.
Revolutionary
democracy ensures the rights of farmers to own land, the minister said.
The
principle gives farmers full rights to rent and hand over their land to their
relatives, he said.
Girma
said investors could also receive land from the government through lease or
other means.
If
investors could get land through rent or lease at a reasonable price, they would
have more opportunity to spend their capital on effectively carrying out their
investment ventures, the minister said.
He
said the possession of land by the government prevents the greedy motives of
some people who want to get rich quick at the expense of poor farmers by selling
and renting land at higher prices.
