Water Harvesting Program Should Futher Be Strengthened: Meles

Addis Ababa, April 9(ENA)-- Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said the efforts launched to implement Water Harvesting Program and Integrated Agricultural Development packages in Amhara State should further be strengthened.

He said the activities underway to harvest rainwater through the digging of boreholes were encouraging.

Meles made the remark here on Wednesday at the end of his two-day visit to various agricultural development activities underway in different parts of the state.

He also visited drought-stricken areas such as in Sekota, Waghemra Zone, Bug and Meket Woreda of North Wollo Zone and Tach Gaint , South Gonder Zone.

The efforts underway to harvest underground water would also help the farmers in the areas to be self-reliant in food while serving them as an additional income-generating source, he said.

A borehole, which was dug by one farmer living in Sekota Woreda, can hold 10,000 cubic meters of water, which will be enough for nine months by consuming 40 liters of water per day.

Meles also called up on governmental and non-governmental organizations to continue their support to the peasantry in the state.
