Ethiopia ready to discharge responsibility in AU’s peace, Security Council: Ambassador
Addis Ababa, May 22(ENA)-- Ethiopia has begun taking measures that could enable to effectively discharge the heavy reasonability entrusted to it as a member country of the peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU), ministry of foreign affairs said.
Director General of the African affairs with the ministry ambassador Konjit Sene-Giorgis said on Saturday Ethiopia is one of the 15 countries elected for the AU’s peace and Security Council.
She said the Ethiopian government attaches paramount importance to the sensitivity of the responsibility and the country would exert utmost efforts to live up to the expectations of the council.
The ambassador recalled that the financial, material and training support Ethiopia provided to the African brothers and sisters had enabled to break the yoke of colonialism.
Ethiopia was elected to the membership of the council for its peacekeeping contribution previously in the Congo and recently for its active participation in peace keeping mission in Rwanda, Burundi and Liberia.
She said the Ethiopian peace keeping contingent has been discharging its duty with a great sense of responsibility.
The ambassador said Ethiopia had greatly contributed to the establishment of the Organization of the African Union(OAU) and the African Union(AU), adding that Ethiopia has also worked in cooperation with all concerned for the prevalence of peace and stability in the continent.
The ambassador said the AU’s peace and Security Council that will be officially launched in Addis Ababa next week and the African Day that will be marked here would meal a lot to Ethiopia.
