We are most pleased to take this opportunity to introduce you the variety of IT services and facilities that the University provides to support the teaching and learning process.
Computer Center
I n today's information age knowledge of computers' is a must. We use computers in each and every aspect of our lives. Any body who wants to succeed in today's world cannot afford to ignore computers and communication technology. Irrespective of the fieled that one specializes in, the basic knowledge of computers and modern technology is an absolute necessity. Be it composing a letter or an article on the word processor, preparing a budget using an electronic spread sheet, sending an email, surfing the internet, making a presentation, preparing lecture notes and so on.
The Computer Centre recognizes the importance of Information technologies and is committed to provide the best service available to support the teaching learning process. We give training on basic computer skills, internet, programming courses for academic staff and students.
In case of failure of hard ware, the computer center staff members are so alert to respond as fast as possible .. Experience tells us that most of the problems are software problems. Of course, our Centre staff are most happy to offer advice and assistance to University members on any computer and network related problems that they may encounter at any time by giving informal trouble shooting training.
Our Network
The University has installed a 100 mb/s-speed campus network infrastructure with extensive coverage in the University. More than 400 readily accessible network points have been installed in the buildings. The network administrator centrally administers the network for security purposes. The network has been established to provide staff and students with amazing connectivity to the campus network; however, classrooms and public areas in the main campus and student resident halls are not connected through the Network. We hope this will be solved when our campus network is connected with the other local Universities and Institutions through a wide area network. The wide area network installation will be realistic in the near future across the country. So far necessary network equipment is purchased. This connection is expected to provide a resourceful channel for the University staff to enhance their collaborations with other academics on a local as well as global scale.
Just as it is necessary for a computer to be properly powered, so has it become necessary for computers to be connected to talk with each other. The hall to submit our jobs to the computer, the computer has come to the workers and their desktops. Further more, since the combined power of many small systems (computers) is greater than the power of one large system, the smaller systems are tied together using data communication link.
For Education and Training
In the University, one of the progresses made over the last years was in fulfilling the need of personal computers to most of the departments. Personal computers have used for:
- individualizing instructions,
- recurring examination questions,
- creating opportunity to introduce new types of computerized learning programs which make the training realistic and motivational.
Some activities currently being taken on-screen are: Win Tutor- for students taking computer courses, Professor Teacher- for students and staff members taking basic computer training on application programs, GIS teach your self, MTECH - for computer maintenance and troubleshooting.
GIS (Geographical Information System)
The University had implemented GIS (Geographical Information System). A geographical Information System (GIS) is a computer-based data processing tool used to manage and analyze spatial information. It introduces students to the theory and techniques of GIS including spatial data capture, management and analysis, and cartographic output. Students will be introduced to basic concepts and techniques of map analysis and the way these are used in geographical information systems in general and desktop GIS in particular. GIS is especially useful for Geography, Environmental Science, Economics, and Land-use planning.
Data Base Automation
Automation of systems is beneficial to the university. Automating the registrar and Library database helped the University community to provide ease of access of data to and for users at many different locations. The automation of data helped us to :
- reduce the intolerable burden of manual handling of ever increasing information and keep quality of information reliable,
- safeguard data against corruption,
- share data across the network, and
- provide automated cataloging system in the library.
Moreover, since the network allows us to be mobile we are not forced to be in the same place where our computing facilities are located.
Internet Service
Research is a fundamental element of university education. Journals and new publications are indispensable to researchers. Obviously, these are extremely expensive for the library to purchase. These days , the worlds most popular latest source of information, publications and journals is the world wide web.. Thanks for the network, all academic staff offices are now connected to the Internet .
Students may also need internet facilities to have additional materials for their lecture notes. Those who are supposed to do senior papers, need resources on the internet to support their research. University has set one internet cafe for students. Due to large number of students and an ever increasing demand to be connected with the internet, number of computers cureently working in the internet cafe are not sufficient. But, we hope the services may be improved.
The University Home Page
Internet is the best and most inexpensive way to let people know who you are, what you are doing /have done, and how. For an organization or institution, setting up a home page is a good way to let the world know what its products are. Realizing this fact, currently our University has set up its own web page . Some visitors of our website have sent us recommendations about the web site. This proves that the website of the University has many visitors. Our center is always happy to hear from you. You may send enquiries, comments and suggestions on our services through email : bdtc@telecom.net.et, or jejaw@yahoo.com , or alexblokhin@usa.com
