Introduction

      The Faculty of Education at Bahir Dar University is one of the most popular of its kind next to the Faculty of Education of Addis Ababa University: the Faculty campus, on the edge of Bahir Dar, is located near to the largest lake in the country, with its own beautiful and unique environmental endowment; Bahir Dar town is situated at the centre of the Amhara region, renowned for the richness of its history and culture. The face of the town itself is changing rapidly, sometimes at an amazing rate, as new buildings and offices spring up. Here at the Faculty, you find our experienced instructors, and thousands of ambitious students from different part of our country, keen to make the most of the study opportunities available to them. This national Faculty is acting as live national museum where different languages views and understandings can be aired, discussed and appreciated, without serious conflict situations. Historical background

      Faculty of Education of the Bahir Dar University, formerly known as Academy of Pedagogy, was established in 1972 by the tripartite agreement of the Government of Ethiopia, UNESCO and UNDP and started functioning the following year under the auspices of the Ministry of Education.
      Its general Objective was to train multipurpose primary education professionals capable of adapting primary education of rural life and rural development.
      Its specific objectives were to train:
  • Primary school teacher trainers;
  • Supervisors for primary schools;
  • Supervisors for primary schools;
  • Educational leaders for primary schools and others educational hierarchies;
  • Organizers of adult education;
  • Community development agents
      Soon after its inception however the program was modified and it started training in a different program, which make pedagogic a major area of study and Amharic, English, Geography and Mathematics minor area.
      Later, further changes were introduced and additional diploma offering departments which train junior secondary school teachers in the social and natural sciences came into existence, these departments are now raised to degree offering programs. Currently, the faculty offers a three-year Bachelor of education degree program in Biology, Chemistry, English, Geography, History, Mathematics, Pedagogical, Amharic, Physics, Physical Education and Sport. Besides these the faculty offers a four year Bachelor of Science program in Industrial Chemistry and a three year of Arts program in Journalism and Communications should be included. In addition to these a four-year program in Industrial Chemistry and a three year program in are given.
      Besides the regular programs the Faculty has summer program where in service training is given to up grade high school teachers to degree level and extension program which takes place in the evenings and week end days. More than 200 teachers and 5000 students are enrolled in the two programs respectively. The faculty is planning to launch a distance education program and short term training's which are aimed at providing on job training's.
      To encourage research activities the Faculty has a research and publication office, which is responsible for coordinating research activities of the departments and staff and for publishing newsletters and bulletins. The office is not functioning at its full capacity due to lack of budged.
      The faculty is currently running a teacher licensing program for 60 teacher educators and offers short term training on general teaching methodology, measurement and Evaluation, student centered and active learning techniques for newly employed teachers of the university.

General Objective

      The general objective of the faculty is teaching, research and provision of consultancy services.

Specific objective

      The specific objective is training teachers for secondary schools.

Facilities

      The faculty has got a number of laboratory facilities at the department of Biology, Chemistry, English and Physics. Additionally there are a number of Lecture halls, student cafeteria and dormitories at the faculty of Education, Lodging and catering facilities, lecture halls, dining halls, class rooms, libraries, workshops,...
