Establishment
Many people still live in extreme poverty and backwardness. Even though roads, hospitals, health centers and schools existed, their services were far from satisfactory. From the brief but stark outline of the preceding paragraphs it is easy to observe that the situation is worrying. But it is neither hopeless nor easy and it is clear that the government alone can’t overcome all these problems. That is why the Amhara Development Association (ADA) was established, as a non-governmental non-profit making organization on may 1992.

Thus, clear Vision, Mission, Objectives, Principles; Values & Strategies were put together by its five years Strategic Plan & Management (SPM) as follows:

 
Vision
To see the people of the Amhara Region free from poverty & backwardness and ADA aspire to be a forerunner in the development endeavor.

Mission
To support the development endeavors of the Amhara people in the areas of health, education, basic skill training and other development activities, through community participation by mobilizing resources from members, supporters, donors and other sources.

Objectives
1. To alleviate the poverty and backwardness of the Amhara people by promoting health, education and other infrastructure services.
2. To promote and support the all rounded development efforts of the Amhara people to attain self-reliance by providing financial, material and technical assistance.
3. To collaborate with governmental and non-governmental organizations working to the betterment of the livelihood of Amhara people.
4. To encourage the initiative of investors who are particularly interested to invest in economic and social sectors of the region.
5. To preserve and protect the natural, historical and cultural heritage of the various peoples of the Amhara Region, and enrich their language and national identity.

Principles & Values
• Promote the capacity, self-confidence and determination.
• Work together with the community and utilize resources effectively.
• Stand for the preservation of the historic & cultural heritages of the region.
• Promote gender equality.
•Give due attention to rural backward areas

Strategic Goals
• To give Basic skill training on the basis of professionally undertaken Training Need assessment.
• Undertake basic adult and child education programs to mitigate the prevalent illiteracy in the region • Increase the coverage of primary education and improve the quality of secondary education.
• Encourage youth and women’s participation in social and economic development.
• Give basic health care and community based reproductive health services.

Mainly because of its noble objectivities and genuine commitment to the well-being of the people, ADA has attracted members from all walks of life not only in the Amhara region but also across Ethiopia
 
Networking & Collaboration
ADA has always been and will continue to work together with grass root community networks as well as relevant development actors.
ADA will also maintain to closely work & collaborates with relevant development and non-governmental bodies at regional, zonal woredas and kebele levels.
