The Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (ETC) signed an
agreement providing for the procurement of a digital transmission technology
equipment on 10th January 2005 at the Corporation’s head office with Norwegian
based NERA Company.
The procurement of the transmission equipment is made with a
total outlay of Birr 84,499,114.51 (US Dollar 9,574,645).
The procurement of the transmission equipment made of such
technologies as Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) and Plesiochronous
Digital Hierarchy (PDH) would realize ETC’s target of enabling the country’s
regional towns get access to modern digital transmission services . It was
learnt that a digital transmission format would be used in optical (fiber)
networks to transport high speed data signals .
The PDH radio transmission technology system has a capacity to
interconnect 169 small towns across the country, while the SDH radio technology
would interconnect seven large transmission links and it would enable the
corporation to implement the target of establishing the second additional
switches to interconnect four major urban centers like Nazareth, Bahir Dar,
Dire Dawa and Mekelle with modern fiber optic networks.
The agreement was signed by ETC’s Chief Executive Officer , Ato
Tesfaye Birru, and by Mr. Sevenn Skutle, African Sales Director of NERA
