Steps for uploading your files using WS_FTP
-
Start the FTP program. The program will start
with a "Session Properties" box overlaying the actual transfer screen.
-
Click "New" to start a new profile.
|
In the "Profile Name" box, type
Your Company Name (N.B. this is
optional).
In the "Host Name" box type 213.55.64.39
"Host Type" is Automatic Detect.
In the "User ID" box type your username
.
In the "Password" box type your login
password.
Check the box next to it that says "Save Pwd". You may leave the "Save
Pwd" box unchecked if you wish to enter it manually on each login.
|
-
Click "OK" in the upper right corner of
the session properties box. This connects your computer to Ethio-Internet's
FTP Server. The Session Properties box will disappear and the main transfer
box will stay active. You will be able to see the progress of the logon
process in the box directly above the menu bar. When the log says "226
Transfer complete" and you see the directory listing of the remote
computer showing only " / username", you are logged on to 213.55.64.39
Notice that the transfer screen is divided into two sides. "Remote System",
the remote computer, that you are logged into, and "Local System", your
computer. Each side is also divided with the top half being sub-directories
and the bottom half the files in the selected directory.
-
On the "Remote System" side, you will see
a blank screen on both the upper and lower halves. These are the directories
and files that are presently in your Website. If you have not previously added
files to your website, there will be nothing there. If you are editing your
site, the files that your have previously added will be there.
-
Go to the left side of the transfer screen. It is
called the "Local System". This displays the directory structure of
your computer. Double click the " . . " on the top of list of
directories. This brings you to your root (C:\).
All of the directories in you computer will now be listed in alphabetical
order. Double click on the directory that you created for building your
website . The active directory at the top of the local system will say "C:\your-website
directory" and you should have your html files listed in it. You are
now ready to transfer the file.
-
There are two arrows located in the middle of the
transfer screen. The top one points from the "remote system" towards the "
local system". The bottom one points from the "local system" towards the
"remote system". Single click your desired html file in the lower half of the
"local system". Click the bottom arrow to transfer the file from the "local
system" to the "remote system". This starts the transfer process. A dialog box
drops down to display the progress. Before you transfer any information to
your server, please note that the FTP really has two transfer modes:
ASCII and Binary .
ASCII mode is for transferring text files to your Web Server, such as Web
pages, or CGI and Perl scripts. Binary mode is for transferring binary files ,
such as graphics , executable programs , or zip files.
-
When the file transfer is completed, click
"Close" in the lower left hand corner of the transfer screen, click "exit" in
the lower right hand corner. You will now be able to view your website by
pointing your browser to http://www.telecom.net.et/~your-website-name
While FTP commands can be issued from the command
prompt on many PCs, we recommend using an FTP client (software that issues the
FTP commands for you, while providing a more intuitive interface than a prompt).
There are many free and useful FTP clients available on the Internet.
