    Training courses at ALERT in 2009



    (1) Essentials of leprosy and tuberculosis for administrative and programme support staff

    March 02 nd —March 13 th , (2 weeks)

    Target group: administrative and managerial staff without a medical background, working in leprosy and TB programmes and donor agencies like journalists, fundraisers, public relations officer. Objectives: to gain a better understanding of the two diseases, to communicate more effectively with public, medical staff and to contribute more efficiently in decision making and priority setting. This course is tailor made with the preceding CBR course. Those who are involved with HIV/AIDS programme management will benefit by attending the following one week course.



    (2) Strategy for HIV/AIDS patient’s management

    March 16 th , — March 20 th , (1 week)

    Target group: All health workers dealing with HIV/AIDS patients. This course intended to support and facilitate proper management and scale up of anti retroviral therapy to people living with HIV/AIDS: The course will deal with indications for Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) monitoring and assessing therapeutic effects with first or second line regimens, treatment with TB and other HIV related conditions etc. Programme managers, administrators with no TB/Leprosy medical background are recommended to take the preceding two weeks course.

    (3) TB/HIV Collaborative activities and programme management (Twice a year )

    March 23 rd , March 27 th (1 week)

    August 17 th , - August 21 st (1 week)

    Target group: All general health care workers, health workers working with TB and or HIV programme, programme managers working at the nation, district level TB /HIV programmes , counselor , data managers, physicians, social workers involved in programme management; The course will deal with situation analysis, setting aims and objectives, epidemiology of TB, HIV, principles of TB,HIV collaborative activities, HIV, AIDS control activities, TB diagnosis, categories of TB,DOT strategies for TB, 3 by 5 initiatives, clinical management of AIDS,ART/TB drugs supply & management, Interim policy on TB/HIV collaborative activities, recording and reporting, surveillance of HIV prevalence among Tb patients, human resource development, programme monitoring & evaluation, budgeting.

    (4) Comunity dermatology (New)

    August 10 th , - August 14 th , (1 week)

    (5) Clinical leprosy and tropical dermatology for Physicians

    September 14 th —September 18 th (1 week)

    Highly recommended for the participants in the following “Management of combined programmes” course who need to refresh their knowledge of clinical leprosy and tropical dermatology. The course can also be taken on its own by physicians responsible for diagnosis, treatment and care of patients with leprosy in either a hospital or a control programme setting.

    (6) Management of combined TB, HIV/AIDS control programmes for physicians and Programme managers.

    Sept. 21 st —October 02 nd (2 weeks)

    Target group: experienced physicians responsible for managing leprosy and TB control programme at the regional level or above. Emphasis on programme management: needs analysis, action plan, implementation of activities, supervision, evaluation, management of PMD. The last few days of the course will comprehensively cover policy on collaborative TB,HIV/AIDS control program activities.

    (7) Clinical leprosy and management of combined leprosy, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS control programmes for senior field staff

    Nov. 2 nd , – November 20 th , (3 weeks)

    Target group: experienced nurses, paramedical workers or supervisors responsible for leprosy and TB control at the district (or equivalent) level. Emphasis on planning, implementation, supervision and evaluation of control activities with special attention to PMD, health promotion and support functions. The last few days of the course will comprehensively cover policy on collaborative TB, HIV/AIDS control programme activities.

    (8) Rehabilitation and Prevention of disabilities

    October 26 th -- Nov. 20 th , (4 weeks)

    Target group: general health workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, podiatrists as well as experienced leprosy workers involved in PMD. Emphasis on both patient care (early detection of nerve function deterioration, health promotion, problem solving) and programme management (POD management, home-based care and rehabilitation). Those participants particularly interested in community based rehabilitation can sign on for the following CBR course.

    (9) Community based rehabilitation (CBR)

    November 23 rd - 4 th , December (2 weeks)

    Target group: all health workers involved in CBR, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and project managers. Emphasis will be on setting up a CBR programme in a given situation focusing on individuals with disabilities, their families and their communities. Participants will be exposed to a realistic approach and to practical learning experiences by visiting existing CBR projects in and around Addis Ababa. The course can be taken on its own or in addition to the preceding PMD course.



    (10) Operational research methods in epidemiology

    December 7 th , to December 11 th , (1 week)

    ALERT can offer in service training in physiotherapy, surgery, dermatology, ophthalmology, etc. Students will have the opportunity to practice in the 240 bed hospital and in the field and use self-study facilities such as CD-ROMs, video, slide programmes and library. It is possible for trainees attending courses to opt to stay on for in-service training after the courses have finished. The duration and content of the in-service training period will be arranged according to the experience and the interest of the individual trainee.

    Training Fees

    Students stay at the ALERT hostel. Each student has a single study room. The bathroom is shared between 2 students.

    •  Course no. 1, 6 & 9: Euro 575/person

    •  Course no. 7: Euro 800/person

    •  During the course a 3 days field trip will cost Euro 100/two nights which includes travel, living expenses, facilitation fee,
