Academic Calendar

The University shall normally operate on a two semester basis sixteen weeks each, between September and end of June except the medical school that has 48 weeks in a year. A flexible academic calendar shall be prepared for the regular and other non-conventional programmes by the University Registrar in consultation with the Academic Vice President/Dean and should be approved by the Senate/Academic Commission.

Admission

Admission to Graduate Programme

Regular Admission

The candidate must have completed the academic requirement for the bachelor's degree with:

a) A Cumulative Grade Point (CGPA) of 2.00 or higher at any recognized faculty of higher learning. However, given the availability of spaces admission to the School of Graduates shall be on competitive basis.

b) The candidate must be supported by at least two letters of recommendation from appropriate body or faculties. Such letters of recommendation should preferably come from instructors or employers.

c) Graduate students shall present evidence of financial support to cover costs of tuition and research project.

d) The minimum number of graduate students to be admitted annually to each programme shall be determined by the faculties concerned, based upon the availability of resources and considering its cost effectiveness.

e) Admission shall take place twice in a year.

f) Age: Any one who wants to join the graduate programme can apply. However, for pedagogical reasons or special requirements of field of study, the Faculty Graduation Committee may set appropriate age limits subject to the approval of the Council of Graduate Studies.

Special Admission

A candidate who has had a diploma in a relevant subject with an outstanding CGPA (=3.5), rich experience in the field of study and passes the entrance examination may be considered for admission provided that he/she takes additional courses from the undergraduate programme as determined by the Council Graduate Studies of each faculty and approved by the Senate.
An advanced standing transfer may be granted to qualified persons if the applicants have successfully completed a minimum of one year of graduate study in another faculty and met the special requirements of the faculty and department whose graduate programme they intend to join. This is granted provided there is a space.

Enrollment and Registration in the Graduate Programme

a) A candidate shall be enrolled for his/her formal studies at the beginning of the academic year following admission.

b) Every student must register at the beginning of each semester in order to keep the programme active. A student who fails to maintain continuous registration with out officially withdrawing from the programme will be considered to have dropped from the program. If such a student wishes to resume the graduate programme application for re-admission must be submitted to the School. The programme for a readmitted student shall be reassessed in terms of the rules and regulation in force at the time of re-admission.

Admission to the Regular undergraduate programs:

Admission to Freshman Level

Admission at freshman level to all undergraduate full-time studies is processed and granted by the Office of the Registrar. The University is open to all but female and those students who come from emerging regions of the country will be given special attention. The University as deemed necessary will set further criteria. In general, admission of students to higher education institutions is based upon the performance of students in School Leaving Certificate Examination (ESLCE). When the ESLCE is phasing out the University may also grant admission at freshman level to the undergraduate degree programme to a candidate who fulfills one of the following requirements:

a)Admission Following Preparatory Education
Applicants who have successfully completed their Ten + Two (10+2) preparatory school education and who pass the University Entrance Examination can be considered for admission.

b)Foreign Examinations Students with foreign examinations of equivalent standard to the ESLCE can sit for the university's Entrance Examination.

Admission with Advance Standing and Transfer

Admission to all undergraduate degree programmes with advanced standing level or post basic B.Sc. programme is processed and granted through the University Registrar, provided that the respective Academic Commission and the Admission and Placement Committee (APC) of the University approves it. Given the availability of places, admission shall be on competitive basis.

i)Before graduating from an institution of Higher Learning, qualified students may apply for advanced standing admission, which is determined by the faculty concerned and APC. The Admission and placement Committee of the university will grant admission to the University if the applicants:
  1. have successfully completed a minimum of one year of study in an institution of higher learning of equivalent standard with minimum CGPA of 2.00 or above;
  2. meet the special requirement of the Faculty/Department they are applying for.
ii)After Graduating from an institution of Higher learning with Diploma. Graduates holding diploma from institutions of higher learning of similar standard may seek admission into the degree programme of the University if they have:
  1. Minimum CGPA of 2.00 on graduation
  2. Working experience in the intended field of study, where applicable;
  3. Favorable recommendations from their employers, where applicable;
  4. Secured source of fund, where applicable and
  5. The screening mechanism of such students shall be devised by the University,
iii)Applicants registered in another recognized tertiary-level institution or programmes may apply for advanced standing admission, provided the courses they have already taken are relevant or similar to the courses offered by the University.

iv)Graduates with B.Sc., may apply for Medical School, provided that they meet the special criteria set by the faculty and produce a letter of permission and recommendation from their employing Organization and had a minimum CGPA of 2.50 on completing their first degree.

Admission to Undergraduate Part-time Studies and CEP

Admission to all undergraduate continuing education programs (CEP) is determined by the APC of the university Senate that uses the same or similar criteria as used in the regular programme. All admission is processed and granted through the university Registrar and the Admission and Placement Committee (APC) of the University. The decision of the committee is final.

Continuing Education Programme (CEP)

The same or similar regulations as in the regular degree and diploma programmes apply for admission into the Continuing Education Programme. i.e.
  1. Admission with ESLCE
  2. Admission following Preparatory Education
  3. Admission with foreign Examinations
All applicants for admission must include all the required information in the admission application form. An applicant who fails to reveal such information will not be allowed to continue his studies in the University.
One cannot apply for a new admission after dropping out or an academic dismissal from the university. Such conditions are treated based on readmission regulation. APC of the university and the faculty are responsible to consider those applications.

Part-time Students

Students who would like to enroll on part-time basis could be allowed to attend classes of regular undergraduate programme for a degree or diploma. They must meet the admission and other requirements of the University, and must obtain the approval of the administrative department, or the faculty they are affiliated to, prior to applying for admission to an academic programme.

Illegal Admission

Securing admission by any other means than the University system after withdrawal, dropping out or dismissal is illegal. The discovery at any time leads to dismissal from the university. A student who has been admitted once and withdrew, dropped out and dismissed is not allowed for new admission as a new applicant.

Enrollments and Registration for Undergraduate Programmes

Medical Examination

All students who have been accepted by the JU must undergo a complete medical examination to determine the status of their health. Those with medical conditions that might interfere with their studies will not be permitted to register. The Academic Commission reviews and approves all medically-related dismissals before they become final.

Screening and Admission Criteria for Post Basic BSc. Programmes

SCREENING CRITERIA

To be eligible for admission into the post basic B.Sc. Programmes, a candidate should fulfill the following:

ADMISSION CRITERIA

Selection of students will be made by rank order of total points from the following areas:
  1. Cumulative GPA in basic Training 30%
  2. Percentage scored in the entrance written examination 60%
  3. Percentage scored during interview 10%
Grade Total 100%
Last Date for Application: Usually at the end of Ginbot (May) E.C

For Health Officer Programme, screening will be conducted by the respective regional health offices. JU will not provide any accommodation like dormitory and food service for all Post Basic Students.
