MICROBIAL GENETIC RESOURCES DEPARTMENT Microorganisms are microscopic forms of life that include bacteria, protozoa, algae, fungi and viruses. Microorganisms are valuable genetic resources, which contribute to the national economic and social development. Microbial Genetic Resources Department (MGRD) is established within IBCR with the objectives of exploration, collection, characterization, evaluation and conservation of microorganisms for sustainable utilization in the development of the national economy. Past Activity Microbial genetic resources were not included in the conservation and research activities of IBCR in the pastalthough some effort was initiated at some stage. Related researches and conservation of some microorganisms have been carried out and are being undertaken in different institutes in the country. Current Activities Microbial Genetic Resources Department is one of newly established departments in the IBCR. Therefore, the primary task of the department at the moment is capacity building. There is a need for human and material capacity building. In organizing MGRD, strategic and action plans have been prepared. A short, medium, and a long- term program break-down are included in the document. The necessary human, and material requirements have been identified. In addition to capacity building, it is planned to work in collaboration with institutes and institutions involved in activities related to conservation and research of microbial genetic resources. Future Plan MGRD has five sub- programs that include bacterial, fungal, algal, protozoa, and viral genetic resources. In the first five year plan together with capacity building, bacterial and fungal genetic resources of importance in agriculture, industry, medicine and environment will be given priority and conservation and research activities will be launched. These activities will be carried out in collaboration with research and academic institutions. Then, as planned in the medium and long-term program, collection, characterization, evaluation, and conservation of algal, protozoal, and viral genetic resources will be implemented. Algae, protozoa, and viruses of value in agriculture, industry, medicine and environment will be given priorities in collection, characterization, evaluation, and conservation. |
