ORDA Undertaking Integrated Food Security Program

Addis Ababa, May 20(ENA)-- The Organization for Rehabilitation and Development in Amara (ORDA) is undertaking integrated food security program in Wogera woreda in North Gondar zone of the Amara State targeting over 70,000 beneficiaries.

The activities being carried out in participatory venture since March include, among others, the digging of 572 water harvesting wells used for small irrigation development and 1000 potable water wells, the woreda coordinator with the organization Eshetu Teshager said.

The construction of a 190-km rural road that would help the farmers get easy market access is well underway, he said.

He also said terracing work which covers 9,000 hectares is underway to alleviate soil erosion while terracing on 3,400-km and construction of flood retention schemes got well underway.

ORDA has secured 42,600 quintals of cereals from the European Union (EU) to undertake the development activities expected to be finalized until July, he indicated.

Some 32 food insecure rural kebeles would benefit from the development activities, Eshetu added.
